the Brief

Department Two was commissioned to direct and produce a suite of creative outputs for Bert Frank to show as part of an installation at Euroluce 2019 during Milan Design Week, and to use across their website and social media channels.

An award-winning luxury lighting brand that designs and manufactures all its products in the UK, Bert Frank has a unique modernist aesthetic informed by design codes of the industrial era. We sought to explore, enforce and expand upon the brand’s ethos and aesthetic by creating a short film that would showcase the intricate beauty of not just the finished pieces, but of the design and historic manufacturing processes involved in their production.

The Plan

We were especially keen to point up the parallels between the BF aesthetic - ‘influenced by the design codes of the industrial era but with a modern twist’ - and the manufacturing processes they employ - a mix of ancient craftsmanship and modern technology.

We aimed to juxtapose imagery of more rudimentary elements and ‘hands at work’ with shots depicting the state-of-the-art technology also used in the manufacturing process, using close cropping and slow motion to draw out the unique intricacies and beauty of each.

THE WORK

Framing and composition were particularly important in this project; alongside the main film, we would be creating a ‘vertical’ edit to be used on Bert Frank’s Instagram stories. Careful storyboarding helped us visualise how we would use negative space, colour and movement to create a distinct yet complementary look for each edit.

The Result

Throughout filming we captured a series of stills depicting the manufacturing process as well as the end products on show at Euroluce 2019. Just as the film would showcase the beauty of product and process in one sitting, so the photographs would work together to portray how much the making, imbued with its own rich colour and visuality, is key to the overall artistry of a Bert Frank piece.

The images and video we produced were used across social media channels by Bert Frank during the course of Milan Design week and beyond.
